This task is for users with the OC Site Manager or OC System Administrator roles.

Google Search Console may require you to verify ownership of your OpenCities site. Verified owners have the highest permissions in Search Console, and there are multiple ways to verify ownership. One of these ways if the HTML tag verification method.

This requires you to configure a meta tag in your Site Management settings that will allow you to pass site ownership verification via the HTML tag method.

Configure the Meta Tag

  1. Go to More > Site Management > your site > Settings.
  2. Select Metadata.
    the metadata icon in site management
  3. Expand the Additional tags accordion menu to view the Add a new tag for your website function.
  4. In the Tag name field, enter "google-site-verification".the add tags menu options in site management
  5. Leave the Tag value drop-down blank and enter the code provided by Google in the Alternative text value field. In this example, the code is "EM8fgT53fgJLdOXpAo2_6gUfggZN18iE7XkThO9rfgE".
  6. Select Add Tag and an entry will appear in the tag list below.a tag entry for google site verification
  7. Select Save Settings and Save.

If you have multiple sites, you must follow this process for each of them.

Validating

Once configured, you should be able to find the new meta tag in the HTML of your OpenCities site pages. The HTML meta tag should look like:

<meta name="google-site-verification" content="EM8fgT53fgJLdOXpAo2_6gUfggZN18iE7XkThO9rfgE">

In the example below, you can see the meta tag in the second last line of the HTML of this OpenCities page.
