As your site grows and you add more content, you may find that some of your pages become outdated. Before you can archive or delete these pages, you'll need to remove any inbound links (internal links that go to the page you want to remove) from the page. This will help prevent broken links on other pages on your site.
You can check if the page you want to remove has any links attached to it from the page's Links tab. This tab will show you any files owned by the page, any pages that are sharing fields through Content Selector from this page, the pages or items that this page is linked to, and the other pages on your site that link to this page. Items listed under [#] pages are linked to this page need to be removed or redirected before you can archive or delete the page.
There are two ways to do this:
- Notify page owners of your intention to archive or delete the page so they can redirect outstanding links.
- Use the Repoint Link option to redirect the links yourself.
Notify page owners
You can use the Notify Owner options to email the page or content owner(s) that you're attempting to delete the page. The page or content owners can then Update their pages and redirect the links to another page.
To notify owners:
- Go to the Links tab of the page you want to remove.
- Select the Notify Owner button under the [#] pages are linked to this page field.
- A system email template will appear, with a text field to type your message to the page owner. We recommend giving the owner a date on which you intend to remove the page and a default page to which you will repoint the links if they are not repointed by that date.
- Select Notify Owner to send the email.
Once the page owner has repointed the links to the page, you can archive or delete it.
You can also notify the owners of the pages that link to the page you want to remove so that they can edit the links in their pages. The process is the same as above, but you use the Notify Linked Content Owners button instead of the Notify Owner button.
Alternatively, you can notify page owners after you have archived or deleted a page so that they can then edit existing links on their pages.
Repoint links
You can use the Repoint Link option to redirect all inbound links to another page on your site.
- Go to the Links tab of the page you want to remove.
- Select the Repoint Link button under the [#] pages are linked to this page field.
- Navigate through the site tree and select the page you want to redirect the links to.
- Once you've chosen the new page, select Repoint Link.
Once you've repointed the links to another page, the pages displaying under [#] pages are linked to this page will be removed, and you can now archive or delete this page.
